For original submission and image(s), see ARM Research Highlights http://www.arm.gov/science/highlights/ Research Highlight Subgrid-scale variability is one of the main reasons why parameterizations are needed in large-scale models. Similarly, subpixel-scale cloud heterogeneity also plagues satellite retrievals of cloud and aerosol properties. Cloud heterogeneity, to some extent, can be represented by the so-called Independent Column Appoximation, i.e., the gridbox or pixel can be divided into many non-interactive subcolumns and each subcolumn can have its own cloud properties. Neglecting the interaction between subcolumns (i.e., cloud structure) can result in considerable biases in the calculated grid-average quantities.

A novel approach for introducing cloud spatial structure into cloud radiative transfer parameterizations

Subgrid-scale variability is one of the main reasons why parameterizations are needed in largescale models. Although some parameterizations started to address the issue of subgrid variability by introducing a subgrid probability distribution function for relevant quantities, the spatial structure has been typically ignored and thus the subgrid-scale interactions cannot be accounted for physical...

3D Continuum Radiative Transfer Images of a Molecular Cloud Core Evolution

We analyze a 3D Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulation of an evolving and later collapsing pre-stellar core. Using a 3D Continuum Radiative Transfer program, we generate images at 7, 15, 175 μm, and 1.3 mm for different evolutionary times and viewing angles. We discuss the observability of the properties of pre-stellar cores for the different wavelengths. For examples of non-symmetric fragm...

3 A Primer in Three-Dimensional Radiative Transfer

Technically speaking, only the 2-stream model in homogeneous (or layered) plane-parallel, cylindrical, or spherical geometries can be truly one-dimensional (1D) because there is no angular dependence to worry about, only the axial flow of radiant energy in a highly symmetric medium with equally symmetric source distributions. By strict mathematical standards, azimuthally-averaged or-symmetric r...

A 3D radiative transfer framework: II. line transfer problems

Context. Higher resolution telescopes as well as 3D numerical simulations will require the development of detailed 3D radiative transfer calculations. Building upon our previous work we extend our method to include both continuum and line transfer. Aims. We present a general method to calculate radiative transfer including scattering in the continuum as well as in lines in 3D static atmospheres...

Computation of Domain-Averaged Irradiance with a Simple Two-Stream Radiative Transfer Model Including Vertical Cloud Property Correlations

Recent development of remote sensing instruments by Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM?) Program provides information of spatial and temporal variability of cloud structures. However it is not clear what cloud properties are required to express complicated cloud fields in a realistic way and how to use them in a relatively simple one-dimensional (1D) radiative transfer model to compute the ...
